OVERVIEW
The Mountauk known as the Montaukett people are an Algonquian based group who are the
original inhabitants of modern day Long Island , New York. The Montauk people linked to the
Shinnecock are said to be the descendants of Mohegan-Pequot people who migrated through
New England. As the Mohegan & Pequot both were originally one single band which migrated
to eastern Connecticut from the Hudson Valley In New York around the year 1500.

Vintage frame of Princess Pocahontas Pharaoh , a woman of the royal bloodline of Montauk
Natives born February 15th 1878 . Pocahontas was born in the middle of the attempts by Arthur
Benson and the Long Island Railroad to force the Montauketts off their land. In October of
1879, before Pocahontas' second birthday, Arthur Benson purchased the Montaukett
reservation for $151,000. When Benson took control of the property, he allowed the Long Island
Railroad to expand service through this land, connecting Montauk to rail service. In 1897,
Pocahontas' brother King Wyandanch Pharoah turned to the courts to try to get the Montaukett
land back, continuing the fight until 1910. Known for creative beadwork, woven baskets, and
the scrub brushes she whittled, Pocahontas never married. She spent most of her life working as
a custodian for the Telephone Company in their East Hampton offices. She was known as the
last Montaukett to be born on the reservation. She would spend most of the rest of her life in
the Freetown area of East Hampton, on the land the Montauketts were given as part of the land
deal for their reservation.

The indigenous people called the strip of Long Island "Paumonake" which translates to 'Land of
Tribute'. After European contact the Dutch invaders called it Lange Eylandt. Later the British
called it Long Island. As from southeastern Massachusetts between the eastern shore of
Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island to the western end of Cape Cod the people spoke an Algonquian
north dialect. Surrounded by the inhabitants who are the Shinnecock, Montauk,
Mohegan-Pequot, Narragansett, Mantinecock , & Unkechaugs. Montauk became a wealthy
Indian tribe due to their ability to use the wampum found on Long Island to make disk-shaped
beads. These beads were then used for tribute payments with their neighboring Algonquian
bands.
